What is Nephrology?

Nephrology is the medical specialty that studies the anatomy of the kidneys and their functions. Its field is the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases and their consequences, which in summary are: -HTA and vascular damage. -Hematuria (blood in the urine), proteinuria (protein in the urine)

It is a specialty that covers a wide field of medicine and requires the nephrologist to have a broad and solid training not only in what is typical of his specialty, but also in those specialties with which he is closely related: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Digestive and Urology etc. On the other hand, HT is part of the day-to-day life of the Nephrologist, occupying an important part of their daily care activity, which is why the Arterial Hypertension Units are generally located in the Nephrology Services.

Nephrology is a perfectly differentiated specialty from Urology, which is a surgical specialty that covers all surgical aspects of the kidney and male genital tract. We can say that there are only 2 diseases in which there may be overlap, such as urinary infections, in which Urology would be more responsible for acting when the solution is surgical and the field of lithiasis, in which Urology would correspond all lithotripsy and surgical treatment, leaving the study of causes in the field of Nephrology.
